You know the weather is bad when you need to saddle up the tauntauns……

This is the view out of my studio window….I kinda took a little creative license…it’s a little loose….I was just having a little fun….the book is 5 x 8 1/2 in so it’s kinda tough to really tweak the details on the tauntaun, but you get the idea.

Acrylic in a moleskine sketchbook…..

Today’s sketch

# 39 was a field trip because it was so nice out.

It was such a beautiful day today that I had to get out to sketch. It was chilly down by the water and being the wimp that I am, I did this sketch from the car…..this study was sketched using gouache in a 5 x 8 1/4 Moleskine watercolor sketchbook. I painted this with Pentel waterbrushes which made it challenging. I wanted to do all the signs in a row but I only had about an hour to do this so I did a study of just this sign.

As an experiment, I used a purple underpainting…..that made it even more challenging….

Can you guess where I was today?

Today’s Sktchy

Pulled out the brushes again….I originally intended this to be another soft bodied acrylic piece.  The under painting is a mottled, speckled layer of rolled on acrylic, which is why the whole painting looks speckled.  I was originally going to use soft bodied acrylics to paint this but instead I used casein.  It was an experiment, next time I will try something different for the under painting.

Also, I limited my color palette to white, black, ultramarine blue, rose red, yellow ochre and burnt umber.
