I Draw and Paint Stories
Playing with my character while listening to Don Henley….. The red balloon has his hair slicked back with his Wayfarers on and he’s off to join the Boys of Summer.

This song, both the English and German versions, have been a source of inspiration for me. I am taking a class that I actually purchased last year during a “big sale” back in November. Glad it was on sale then because I am not sure I could spare the finances now.
Our assignment is to pick one of 4 texts and create characters, accessories, etc but along the way, and we have also been given daily drawing prompts. I read the text and I had to pull out some things that could be accessories and begin to draw the character. My subjects are a balloon and a little girl. Hence the 99 red balloons….now that song is stuck in my head.
Drawing a ballon may sound easy…hey just draw a circle with a string, right? Uhm, no. The balloon needs personality. The shape, the string and how the face is placed all leads to personality of the character…..I drew many balloons may different ways and narrowed it down to these:
So the red balloon won, as soon as I drew it I knew it was the right one….but then, I had to draw the face…..I drew bunch of eyes, faces, etc….after drawing a bunch of faces, I narrowed it down to these eight:

And this guy is the end result….more to come about this guy and his friend….
Another Make Art that sells image. This is a sketchbook rendering that isn’t for sale since it was copied from another image. The idea behind the exercise is to show your skill at drawing various subject matter, in this case, a car…I moved on to add it to a story.
I have also been adding music lyrics…..

I decided to use the postcard as a spring board for a story. I am not sure where the story is going but there are some thoughts whirling about in my head about where I may take it.

There were a few small objects on the items that could be used. I wanted to write a story about them but in the end I didn’t. I can still use them as fodder down the line.

I took two of the items and reminisced about Cape May.

I found that making up stories about objects is fun….Here is a close up of one page and the full spread.

I took the objects and made separate sketchbook pages with them. On some of the pages I made up stories about the objects….

We were assigned to sketch these objects…this is round 1 of my object sketches, ink on paper.

Here are the versions with color added. These are just assignments for the Make Art That Sells class, these are not for sale more will they be sold:
